Unfortunately, given today was the first day of lectures, I was running a bit late on public transport and ended up going into my first Software Apps lab a bit late but the teacher was helpful. He gave me some sheets with a group assignment - a Microsoft Access database project. Unfortunately it wasn’t until I actually joined a team that I realised I was in 3rd Year (Junior Sophister) MSISS. A pity since the project seemed interesting and quite doable.
Engineering Maths was in the Hamilton Building in a lecture theatre packed to the rafters and teeming with Engineering students. The lecturer was an enthusiastic professor clearly interested in the application of mathematics beyond rote and formula - he gave thought-provoking examples of how mathematics thought by rule restricts us to a small set of problems. He challenged us to develop our learning skills to approach the couse enthusiastically, hungrily and with an appreciation for the mathematical exploration.
The final lecture today was shared with BESS students and was presented by the head of the business school. It was on organisation and management, the study of organisations and the development of organisational structure, i.e. how in recent history we have moved from a market model to an organisational model. (Market to Supermarket)
From seeing 3rd year software apps I think I’ll enjoy the class and engineering mathematics seems like it will be a challenging course. Organisation and management may be less enthralling, given I’ve a lesser interest in business and there is alot of theory and history though the required reading is varied and may well be insightful.
I had a tough choice today between attending the Paintball or Rifle Club introduction and in the end chose the Rifle Club because I think it was probably a bit more beneficial to find out about club safety and how the club runs. The rifle club shooting range is open between 6pm-10pm every weekday and can be booked on paper beside front arch or online at DURC. Looking forward to having a go!
